Body found near harbour By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF A post mortem is to be conducted on a body found floating about a mile out from Oakville Harbour yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon. Police said the body, which was discovered by people in a passing sailboat around noon yesterday, is that of a white male between the ages of 35-40. The area around Town of Oakville Water-Air Rescue Force (TOWARF) headquarters at the mouth of Oakville Harbour was roped off as police set about retrieving the body from the lake. A mile out into Lake Ontario, two police marine units could be seen converging at one location for several minutes after which both boats returned to the harbour with their grim cargo. As a small crowd of curious onlookers gathered as the body, enclosed in a red bag, was placed on a stretcher and loaded into a van belonging to a funeral home. The body will be taken to Hamilton General Hospital where a post mortem will be carried out. Police said the body was fully clothed, but had no shoes. There was no apparent trauma and foul play is not suspected at this time. Police were able to identify the man, however, the name is being withheld until next of kin are notified. These are the first positive mosquitoes found in Halton Region this year. The mosquitoes came from the areas of Cornwall and Chartwell Roads, and Fourth Line and Rebecca Street "The finding of West Nile virus in mosquitoes is an indicator of increasing risk of illness in humans," said Dr. Monir Taha, Halton Region's Associate Medical Officer of Health. "Summer still has some time to go. Halton residents need to keep taking precautions like covering up, avoiding peak mosquito activity times and wearing insect repellent with DEET." So far this year, one bird in Burlington and five birds in Oakville tested positive for WNv. Mosquitoes can transmit WNv to humans after becoming infected by feeding on the blood of birds carrying the virus. The following are steps that residents can take to protect themselves and their families from mosquitoes: · Cover up. Wear lightcoloured, long-sleeved shirts and pants with tightly-woven fabric. · Avoid being outdoors in the early evening to morning. · Reduce mosquito breeding sites around your home by getting rid of all water-filled containers and objects. · Use an approved insect repellent, containing DEET. Yesterday, Local 245 members gathered to hold a picket painting and protocol event. The purpose of the event was to show solidarity and support for their bargaining team and to inform the membership of legal and safety-related dos and don'ts on the picket line. Local 245 had requested the use of Sheridan property to hold the events, but was denied. Jay Jackson, OPSEU Local 245 President said, "This is the first time ever that the employer has denied OPSEU space on college property to hold union activities." The events were held on public grounds outside the campuses in Oakville and Brampton. On July 16, support staff, province wide, rejected management's contract proposals and voted to give their bargaining team a strike mandate.
