www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 29, 2008 - 7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Stone sculptures mysteriously came and went downtown Was famous British environmental artist, Andrew Goldsworthy, visiting Oakville last Friday night? If not, who was the mystery artist who balanced the rocks along the lakefront at the foot of Trafalgar Road? Inuksuk (plural Inuksuit) is the Inuit word for these manmade stone landmarks, historically found throughout the Arctic, but Oakville residents enjoying a stroll on Saturday were unexpectedly treated to an artistic spectacle, worthy of a world-class museum. An array of stone sculptures -- some over two feet tall -- spanned the length of the park (in downtown Oakville, along the lakeshore). Each appeared impossibly balanced in a feat of engineering. One sculpture used only two large rocks, each triangular, standing balanced tip-totip. Some passersby claim to have seen a lone man creating these masterpieces the night before. He left as mysteriously as he appeared, and the sculptures were gone by Sunday. This is the M.O. of Andrew Goldsworthy, whose temporary land art was featured in the 2001 documentary film, Rivers and Tides. He also created the Neuberger Cairn, now at the museum at the University of New York in Purchase. Was he visiting Oakville? Or do we have the next Andrew Goldsworthy living in our midst? Does anybody know? PS: I had no camera, but I asked a passerby to send you one of his photos and I am hoping he did -- it was an unforgettable sight. PLUM LIND Ed. Notice Dated August 27, 2008 Town is ship-shape this summer At the risk of appearing to pander to the current municipal administration, I have to say that Oakville looks fantastic this summer. The cleanliness, the flowers, the shrubs and trees all look vibrant and alive; the colours are beautiful. It seems impossible to believe that it was only a few years ago that my wife and I picked up more than 20 large garbage bags of waste along Third Line from King's College to the North Service Road. I suspect that the wet weather and the sponsorship of displays in medians and along major arteries may well have a lot to do with how good things look. As I drive around the town daily in my volunteer transportation role, I can't help but smile and enjoy the view. Kudos to those who have the vision and are co-ordinating the effort and thanks to those volunteers and municipal employees who are getting the job done.
