34 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday August 30, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com BUSINESS PROFILE AMEC continues to prosper in Oakville This leading international project management and engineering service company has a bright future within our community Some the largest engineering feats accomplished in the world have had their roots planted in Oakville - in three office towers around Winston Park Drive at the QEW. That's where the leading international project management and engineering services company called AMEC is housed. More than 500 employees work in this hub where such firsts as creating Ontario's first diamond mine was managed. Going beyond the mandate, AMEC completed the Victor Diamond Mine near Attawapiskat (on James Bay) nine months ahead of schedule, on budget and with an outstanding safety record - an all too rare feat in the world of large-scale projects. "It's a huge achievement that's all due to the performance of our staff and to the extensive planning effort that was undertaken," said Steve Ciccone, Vice President of North American Operations in Mining and Metals. Recently, AMEC completed the interior fit-out of the University Health Network's Toronto Medical Discovery Tower. It's a flexible 400,000 square-foot research facility -- a project that was overseen in Oakville. "It's a point of pride for us," said Ciccone. With 23,000 employees worldwide who work in energy, power and processing industries in over 30 countries, Oakville is an exception because it manages a lot of areas of the business where other offices typically have a singular focus. Such variety makes the Oakville office a particularly appealing workplace. "It provides a great opportunity to work in different industries," said Ciccone. From employee development programs and extensive, ongoing training to working with leading edge technology AMEC makes improvements from within and beyond. AMEC began operating in Canada in 1907 in response to the burgeoning power demands of the time. It built the country's first large scale hydroelectric plant in 1911, at Horseshoe Falls, and has since added to its extensive project list including the award winning environmental work on Highway 407, restarting nuclear reactors one and two at the Bruce A Power station and designing the first commercial-scale, biodiesel production plant in Canada for Biox Corporation in Hamilton. AMEC's Oakville location also occupies a dominant position in the design and construction of wind power plants and is currently completing one of the largest installations near Kincardine on the shores of Lake Huron. In addition, 100 dedicated staff are supporting the overflow of work that is a result of the huge boom in the potash industry in Saskatchewan. "Distributed engineering is becoming more and more the way AMEC works," said Ciccone. One reason that Imperial Oil awarded the engineering and project management of its large Kearl oil sands project to AMEC was its demonstrated ability to seamlessly execute the work in several offices. The Oakville office is tasked with the design of the utility island of this mas- (TOP LEFT) AMEC Oakville staff during a project meeting. (TOP RIGHT) Enbridge Ontario Wind Power Project. Over the next five years AMEC is managing the Baffinland Iron Mines Mary River project on Baffin Island, which expects to produce 18 million tonnes of iron ore per year and operate for at least 25 years. Described as a world class, $4 billion project, it is so massive that AMEC will require 300 more staff by next summer to keep up with the demands of this project and it's other projects. Awards by way of accolades also come AMEC's way. Sheridan College is bestowing its Big Picture Award for Business on the company for its demonstrated commitment to the school, while also leading the field in innovation and achievement. The Oakville Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club selected AMEC as the Large Business of the Year for 2007, and AMEC was just selected as Oakville's Employer of the year in the Oakville Beaver's Readers' Selection Awards. There are numerous community groups also singing the praises of this local pillar. An active participant in the Oakville Chamber of Commerce, AMEC is also the 2008 Campaign Chair for the professional division of the United Way of Oakville. In smaller but equally important ways the company supports many local charities through a staff committee that organizes fundraising efforts throughout the year. This all goes to prove that as deep as AMEC's roots run in the world of commerce, the company is equally intent on making the same positive impact on the community in which it operates.
