www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday September 3, 2008 - 13 Graffiti art activities this week The Town of Oakville, in partnership with the Oakville Galleries, is hosting a Youth Urban Art Showcase at Centennial Square on Thursday, Sept. 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. "Youth are key to the vitality of our community and we need to provide them with meaningful creative outlets to encourage their imagination," said Nina de Vaal, director of recreation and culture for the Town of Oakville. "By offering urban art opportunities in a safe environment, we allow youth to communicate their messages without compromising the town's appearance." The Youth Urban Art Showcase will include live urban art demonstrations set to the music of DJDL and Emcee Concept. Local youth artists will take to the four by eight foot plywood boards with their cans of spray paint to showcase this growing trend of unique art. According to Halton Regional Police Services, if graffiti is done without being granted permission, it is considered vandalism. Numerous studies and reports indicate that legal urban art projects decrease illegal graffiti and tagging in communities. Legal opportunities successfully reach out to a wide number of youths who consider graffiti their own form of expression, police say. "There is a great need in our community for public discussion on the different interpretations surrounding tagging and graffiti. As an art form going back many years, legal graffiti has made its mark in the contemporary art world and our community needs to know this," said Francine Périnet, director of Oakville Galleries. The Halton Regional Police Services and their Youth Respect Action Committee held the first Urban Art Contest in June at the Oakville Waterfront Festival. The contest invited urban artists to deliver the message "Give Respect, Get Respect" through their artwork. Contest entries will be displayed at the Oakville Galleries at Centennial Square and First Thursdays Galleries in downtown Oakville on Sept. 3 and 4. Various pieces will also be featured at Whole Foods Market, located on the corner of Trafalgar Road and Cornwall Road, for a limited time.
