On Friday, Aug. 22, animal control officers found the cats in squalid conditions after being tipped off by a concerned neighbour. Johanne Golder, the executive director of the Oakville and District Humane Society, said the home was apparently the site of a Bengal cat breeding operation gone wrong. The cats were taken in by the humane society, but caring for them has taxed the organization's already limited resources. "We definitely need money to support them," said Golder, who noted that the shelter on Cornwall Road can house around 160 cats comfortably, but currently has 400 in its care. "We're processing the cats, some should become available for adoption next week, I should think," said Golder. "We've had a huge response from people wanting to adopt and foster them, which is great." Golder also noted that while adoptions at the shelter are up, more animals come in every day, so the humane society must spend more money to house, feed and spay or neuter its charges. "We certainly need people to think about adopting, now's the time," said Golder. "We're overcrowded and limited on space. The community has started to come together to support us, but we need more help." Golder noted the humane society has reached the point where it may rent a second trailer to help house the cats because there is simply no room in the shelter. For those not ready to adopt, Golder asks they try being a foster parent to a cat. "You can see a change in some of them already," said Golder. "They're getting used to some of the staff who are looking after them. They're realizing that they're not being threatened and they don't have to worry, but it takes time to build trust. They've been through a lot." Anyone interested in becoming a foster parent or adopting one of these cats, when they are ready, can call the shelter at 905-845-1551 or e-mail rescuecats@oakvillehumane.ca. A one-time donation to help the rescued cats may be made to the Oakville and District Humane Society either online, by mail or by telephone. Donations should be earmarked `rescuecats.' Ongoing donations of just $10 per month will help the humane society continue to rescue animals in distress. See more details at www.oakvillehumane.ca.
