Wilkins, United States Ambassador to Canada will give the keynote address at the Oakville Chamber of Commerce's 54th Annual President's Dinner on Tuesday, Sept. 23. It will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Oakville Conference Centre at 2521 Wyecroft Rd. "We are very pleased to have the opportunity to host Ambassador Wilkins," said Chamber President Gerry Popp. "Our economy is inextricably linked with that of the United States. With only weeks until the American presidential election, our members and the community will be very interested in hearing the comments and opinions of such a high profile and influential member of the American government." John Nay, U.S. Consul General in Toronto, stated, "Ambassador Wilkins was delighted to receive the invitation from the chamber and is looking forward to his visit to Oakville." Since his appointment as ambassador, Wilkins has travelled widely throughout Canada to better understand the country, its people and its culture. Wilkins emphasizes the positive relationship shared between the United States and Canada. Significant issues, such as the softwood lumber dispute have been resolved since ambassador Wilkins was appointed more than three years ago. There are ongoing discussions between the Canadian and U.S. federal governments on a number of matters ranging from protection of intellectual property and copyright, to border security and infrastructure issues. The chamber's president elect Aby Alameddine said, "There has been a great deal of excitement around having Ambassador Wilkins as our keynote speaker. This will be one of the largest events in our chamber's 59-year history." In the last year, under Popp's leadership, the Oakville chamber had record membership and revenues, as well as near-record attendance at its events, said Alameddine.
