www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday September 6, 2008 - 15 OTMH needs volunteers Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) needs volunteers at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) and will host an Auxiliary Volunteer Recruitment Fair Thursday, Sept. 11. The fair will run from 6-8 p.m. in the Auditorium of OTMH, 327 Reynolds St. Volunteers are sought to work in direct patient care and indirect support services and could be men, women or youths aged 14 and over. At the fair, volunteer and staff representatives from various areas of the hospital will be available to discuss the different volunteering opportunities. Refreshments and complimentary parking will be provided. "Volunteering is all about service to others and giving back to the community. It is a great opportunity to be part of a team, learn new skills and develop lasting friendships," said Doug Coate, president of the Auxiliary to OTMH. "In addition to the personal sense of contribution to a greater good, you often get a smile or gesture of gratitude -- and that's the best payback ever. If you are interested in making a difference in the lives of others, we encourage you to stop by the volunteer fair and find out more about OTMH by speaking to those who are already volunteering. Bring your questions and your curiosity." "Our volunteers support our hospital staff in enhancing the comfort and care of our patients while diligently fundraising to help provide vital medical equipment for the hospital. OTMH is extremely fortunate to have the tremendous support of a strong dedicated volunteer force -- men, women and youths -- who share their time, energy and skills with us every day," said Carole Daniels, manager of volunteer services. "Their diligent efforts, friendly smiles, compassion, and encouraging words touch many lives." With almost 700 volunteers, the Auxiliary to OTMH contributes more than 84,000 hours of service annually across more than 70 hospital services. They provide care and comfort on the nursing units, renal dialysis units and the emergency department; greet outpatients and visitors; offer magazines and tuck items to patients; fundraise (Bingo, HELPP lottery, raffle ticket sales and the gift shop); provide behind-the-scenes assistance and more. Last year the Auxiliary raised $330,000 for the purchase of much-needed medical equipment and the refurbishment of various areas of the hospital. "We have a variety of front-line and leadership volunteering opportunities available, including direct patient care areas such as inpatient units, patient transport, ophthalmology, and surgical day care. We are also looking for individuals who might be interested in working at the information desk, compiling charts or taking on a leadership position on the Auxiliary board," said Daniels. "However, these are just a few of the volunteer opportunities currently available at OTMH." Log on to the Volunteer Section of the hospital website -- www.haltonhealthcare.com -- for a complete list of all of volunteer positions or to download the volunteer application package. "One two-to-four-hour shift a week (days, evenings or weekends) is all it takes to make a really worthwhile difference at your community hospital. We also offer shared positions, on-call and other flexible arrangements."
