www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday September 6, 2008 - 25 Bantam Angels claim bronze at CNE tournament A third-place finish at the Bulova Watch Women's CNE Fastball Tournament has qualified the Oakville bantam Tier 1 Angels for next year's National Softball Association (NSA) and United States Slo-Pitch Softball Association (USSSA) World Series competitions. Oakville nearly finished second at the CNE competition, which featured many of the top teams in Ontario and New York, but the Rochester Lions rallied from a 4-2 deficit in their final at-bat to down the Angels 5-4 in the silver-medal contest. Renee Helmer had helped Oakville take a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh, belting a solo home run. Angels pitcher Lauren McLaughlin held the Lions scoreless into the sixth inning. The CNE tournament concluded a strong season for the Angels, who finished the year with a 31-22 record and one gold, three silver and two bronze medals in tournament play. The club was also fifth at the Provincial Women's Softball Association (PWSA) Tier 1 provincial championships and represented Canada at this year's NSA World Series. Members of the team are Michayla Caughlin, Meghan Doherty, Mariana Gallardo, Kirsty Grant, Kelly Hannivan, Nicole Helmer, Renee Helmer, Kimberly Lawson, Lauren McLaughlin, Samantha Morneau, Alex Saunders and Michelle Saunders. STRONG START: The Oakville minor atom AAA Rangers opened the rep hockey season recently by winning silver at the Rochester '99 AAA Invitational Tournament. Minor atoms open with silver in Rochester A quarter-final upset of the Boston Minutemen highlighted the Oakville minor atom AAA Rangers' silver-medal performance at the recent Rochester '99 AAA Invitational Tournament. The Rangers lost 7-1 to Boston in round-robin play, but managed to turn the tables on the Minutemen in the playoff portion of the tournament. Oakville goaltender Christopher Elliot kept the Rangers in the game early, stopping 16 Boston shots in the opening 10 minutes, and his teammates scored on their first two shots on the way to a 4-1 victory. Oakville then edged the Syracuse Stars 4-2 in the semifinal, clinching the game with an empty-netter late in regulation, before falling 5-2 to the Toronto Marlies in the championship game. The Rangers were 2-1-1 in roundrobin play, including wins over Perinton, N.Y. (6-0) and the Toronto Jr. Canadians (3-1). Colton Incze recorded the shutout against Perinton. The silver medal was a promising start to the season for the Rangers, who were seeing their first game action of the year. Seven American teams and four Canadian squads participated in the tournament. Peewee Hornets have a Blast Lauren Gentile found a dramatic way to say farewell to her long-time teammates. Gentile scored the tying goal late in regulation time, then provided the gamewinner in overtime to lift her team of Oakville Hornets peewee A and AA players to a 2-1 victory over Toronto in the championship game of the recent Canlan Pre Season Blast tournament. It was Gentile's final game with the team, as her family relocated to Montreal that weekend. The championship was a promising start to the upcoming season, in which the girls will represent Oakville in the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League.
