www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday September 6, 2008 - 3 PHOTOS BY RON KUZYK / OAKVILLE BEAVER Channeling urban art The Town of Oakville, in partnership with the Oakville Galleries, presented a Youth Urban Art Showcase at Centennial Square on Thursday evening. The event included live urban art demonstrations set to the music of DJDL and Emcee Concept. Young local artists created their own graffiti art on four-by-eight-foot plywood boards to showcase this growing trend of unique art. According to Halton Regional Police Services, if graffiti is done without being granted permission, it is considered vandalism. Numerous studies and reports indicate that legal urban art projects decrease illegal graffiti and tagging in communities. The Halton Regional Police Services and its Youth Respect Action Committee held the first Urban Art Contest in June at the Oakville Waterfront Festival. The contest invited urban artists to deliver the message "Give Respect, Get Respect" through their artwork. YOUNG ARTISTS AT WORK: Among the many young urban artists honing their craft at the Youth Urban Showcase at Centennial Square Thursday, were George Morrison (top), Brayden Hauraney (right) -- (above) a drawing of the Joker painting he produced -- Tyler White (below right) and Alex Sheriff (below left).
