www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday September 10, 2008 - 9 Schools lock doors as police search for suspect By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Summer Vacation Over? A police search for a suspect in the Glen Abbey area Tuesday prompted many schools in the area to go into lock out mode. In `lock out' mode, students are not allowed off school property and no one is allowed in, said Marnie Denton, Halton District School Board Communications Manager. The incident began around noon when police tried to arrest a suspect wanted in connection with numerous criminal offences. The suspected bolted, however, and eluded a police dragnet that saw police cruisers take up positions at North Service Road West and Upper Middle Road. A number of police vehicles, including those of the Halton Police Tactical Rescue Unit, could also be seen assembled on Abbeywood Drive. "They called a canine unit to track him," said Detective Dale Stanton. "One of the schools was close by where the dog would be tracking, Abbey Park, and we asked the school just to keep the children out of the back of the school while the dog was working." At this point Abbey Park went into `lock out' mode. "The day proceeds quite normally. It's just that outdoor activities are cancelled," said Denton. "Going out for lunch and all that sort of stuff is cancelled until police tell us that the situation is resolved." After police contacted Abbey Park High School, the school board also `locked out' Pilgrim Wood, Heritage Glen, Abbey Lane, West Oak and Captain R. Wilson public schools as a precaution. "We sent a letter home today with those students to inform parents of what happened," said Denton. 25% off any Oran Vinyl eplacement window order th this Ad. Grants did not cover all fundraising costs Continued from page 6 concentrate most of its efforts on awareness initiatives and fundraising for the project. However since these grants covered only 65-75 per cent of these specified costs and nothing towards things such as insurance, office supplies and a part-time office assistant, the foundation had to spend some time on fundraising activities (tall ship cruises, Monarch Balls, one golf day, sponsorships, etc.) for operating expenses. Over the nine-year life of the Foundation these time-consuming operating expense fundraising efforts brought in gross revenues of $606,000, but after expenses (such as boat rentals, meal costs, equipment rentals, etc.) only $230,000 was raised on a net basis, none of which went to third party fundraisers. It was a privilege to be involved in this project and to meet so many people who agreed with the vision and supported it. However, despite enormous efforts from all concerned, we were unsuccessful in raising sufficient funds to convert the dream into a reality. But at least we tried. BARRY WYLIE, C.A.
