www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 12, 2008 - 35 Worrywarts and the great divide explored at Oakville Galleries Oakville Galleries is hosting receptions to open two Canadian exhibitions: Beyond Her Usual Limits by video artist Deirdre Logue, and Burning Cold, which features an exploration of Canadian identity, tonight. Beyond Her Usual Limits runs from Sept. 13 to Nov. 16 at Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens. Burning Cold, runs from Sept. 13 to- Nov. 23 at Oakville Galleries at Centennial Square. An open reception for Burning Cold is at 7:30 p.m. at Centennial Square. A reception sponsored by Whole Foods Market will follow from 8:30-10 p.m. in Gairloch Gardens for Beyond Her Usual Limits Beyond Her Usual Limits was curated by Matthew Hyland. This exhibition of Logue's recent work centres on video-based self-portraits of obsessions, anxieties and reluctant self-revelations as communicated through a series of performative and repetitive actions. In sharing a series of affective, but ultimately guarded gestures, Logue cultivates an uncanny intimacy with the camera to explore the precarious nature of time, the body and the self. Burning Cold features artists Shuvinai Ashoona, BGL, Brian Jungen, Tania Kitchell, Craig Leblanc, Annie Pootoogook, John Sabourin, Doug Smarch Jr., Emily Vey Duke and Cooper Battersby. Organized by a panel of curators from across the country and circulated by the Yukon Arts Centre Public Art Gallery, this exhibition showcases some of Canada's finest young artistic talents from both the north and south. In introducing questions and concepts crucial to understanding Canada's national identity, this exhibition considers the unique cultural and social experiences of First Nations people living in northern Canada as juxtaposed with the realities of the Canadian south.
