www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 12, 2008 - 5 Poland returns to lead Oakville Greens By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The Green Party has switched candidates in the Oakville riding. Marion Schaffer, who ran in last year's provincial election, stepped aside during a Green Party meeting Wednesday night, to welcome Blake Poland back to the role of candidate for the upcoming federal election. Poland won the initial riding nomination in March of 2007, but had to drop out, citing personal and work-related issues. With the sudden arrival of the federal election, Poland now feels fit to return. "I'm able to come back and I'm quite excited to be back," he said. "Marion very whole heartedly stepped aside and has agreed to run as a Green Party candidate in Etobicoke where she spent 17 years." A long-time Oakville resident and a professor in the field of envi- ronmental health at the University of To r o n t o , P o l a n d works with a wide cross section of people, from the homeless to w o r l d - Blake Poland renowned scientists. "I think that gives me a bit of insight into some of the issues the Green Party is very strong on," he said. Poland said Canada needs a Green Party in power due to the environmental issues now gripping the planet. "This issue of climate change is very pressing and there are other issues surrounding energy security. These are, admittedly, somewhat longer-lasting issues, but we've had almost 20 years of knowledge on these with very little action being taken," said Poland. "Canada's greenhouse gases have actually gone up by 20 per cent since 1990." Poland noted that besides having an environmental policy that is stronger than the Conservative, Liberal and NDP parties, the Greens also have a solid platform on social and economic issues and therefore should not be ruled out as a one-issue party.
