www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 12, 2008 - 7 Workers offered early retirement Continued from page 1 tinues to suffer from the effects of an ailing U.S. economy. To soften the impact of the job losses, CAW Local 707 President Gary Beck, said the union is trying to convince those eligible for early retirement to accept a package that includes a $75,000 cash incentive and a $35,000 voucher for a Ford vehicle. A canvass is currently taking place to see how many of the 640 eligible workers would be interested in this. "We need to get 500 people to save those jobs, which is going to be pretty difficult," said Beck. "You have to look at the age of the people and all those different scenarios of why they might stay and why they might go." Ford officials blamed the job losses on numerous factors. "Things like high fuel prices, the softening of the housing mar- ket, the tightening credit situation and other economic pressures have been eroding consumer confidence levels in the U.S.," said Lauren More, vice president of communications for the Oakville plant. "That means the auto industry sales in the U.S. are expected to decline and more than 80 per cent of Oakville assembly's production goes to the U.S." This announcement comes little more than a month after the plant told 350 new hires, just before their first shift, that positions no longer existed for them. At that time, Beck voiced his concern that layoffs were not far behind. "This announcement is just further bad news for the auto industry and it's really taking its toll," he said. "The moral at the plant is obviously low." Among the worst hit by this news, Beck noted, are workers who were transferred to Oakville from the Windsor Ford plant following job cuts there. Beck said, these workers initially faced a good situation when they came to Oakville in July as 350 new hires were going to provide them with an umbrella against job cuts. Those 350 positions have since disappeared and now because the Windsor workers have the least seniority in the plant they will be the first to be laid off. "I couldn't even imagine," said Beck. "The cost of living is completely different from Windsor to Oakville so, they took a big cut selling their houses to come here. Houses are probably double here and now they may not have a job. Some people are locked into leases for a year and now what. It's just terrible." DON'T PAY RETAIL! I did not receive a tax receipt, nor would I have used it for such a paltry amount. The point of this story is that I believe that people donate for a number of reasons, however it's almost always personal and mine was no exception. I even have an original brochure listing the costs of paver stones, paver areas, trees, trellis's, and speciality items. Ralph is more than welcome to take a look at these.
