8- The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 12, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Residents can pick up free compost Halton Region is helping local residents once again make their gardens beautiful with its Fall Compost Give-Away. The annual event, which takes place today, Saturday and Monday, offers citizens the opportunity to get seven bags of free compost from the Halton Waste Management Site between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The compost is created from residential yard waste picked up from curbsides as part of Halton's strategy to divert waste from the landfill. Last year, more than 26,000 tonnes of yard waste was diverted. "I would like to thank Halton residents for their ongoing enthusiastic participation in the bi-annual Compost Give-Away event," said Regional Chair Gary Carr. "The Compost Give-Away program is becoming a significant tradition and a great way to help our residents, our local food banks and our landfill site." More than 1,000 tonnes of processed compost will be available to residents. Those who stop by are encouraged to bring along a donation of a non-perishable food item for local food banks. Cash donations will also be accepted in lieu of food contributions. Participants must bring their own bags or containers and a shovel, in order to bag their own compost. The Halton Waste Management Site is located at 5400 Regional Road 25, Milton. For more information call 905-825-6000 or visit www.halton.ca.
