As well, we want to create a seniors' charter that protects income, housing and healthcare for vulnerable seniors. They also want to implement a pay-equity task force and they want to put together a $1.6 billion affordable housing act." Young said his party was the only party in Canada's history to ever elect a woman as prime minister, which took place in 1993 when Kim Campbell succeeded Brian Mulroney. He added it was his party that altered the law to allow for the first female Member of Parliament in 1921. Bring a smile to our community. Smile Cookies are coming. This tradition of recognizing the greatness in women continues to this day with a number of women on the Conservative team including Lisa Raitt, who is running in the Halton riding, said Young. Poland said the other parties can talk all they want about how many women they have in their parties, pointing out that his is the only one that has a woman as a leader. "Believe me, she has worked tirelessly to make sure there are as many female candidates as possible right across the country," said Poland. Poland also listed bringing in a universal childcare program and helping women in poverty, as important Green Party platforms. When asked about Stephane Dion's `Green Shift,' Young called it the most inflationary tax in 20 years, noting it would increase the cost of everything. Transport trucks would be hit with this tax, he said, and they would pass on that cost to the goods they transporting. Poland said the Green Party is also proposing a Green Shift, which is somewhat different from the Liberal version. He also noted that it is not a tax hike, but a tax shift. "If we want to change people's behaviour to move into a more sustainable economy, encourage energy efficiency, encourage employment and encourage the kinds of things that we all want and value, we have to put a price on it," he said. Brown said the Liberal version of the Green Shift would be monitored by the auditor general to ensure that there is no increase in taxes. In the Liberal version, polluters are taxed on their carbon emissions, while taxes on income and investment are reduced. Bilek said the NDP would not impose a tax except on big polluters. Lisa Raitt -- Conservatives Continued from page 11 things that are vital to those of us in Halton: the $100 monthly child care benefit to parents, tax credits for GO Transit users and kids' sports activities, and the $5,000 credit to first-time homebuyers. Voters in Halton have told me clearly that economic leadership balanced with smart environmental policy - is the most important issue to our families, businesses and individuals. Representing Halton in Parliament, this will be my number 1 priority. Amy Collard -- Green Continued from page 11 care system. We need to actively promote healthy lifestyles. A sustainable environment is fundamental to the future health and well-being of all Canadians. We can readily see the effects of polluted air, water and land. Look up and see the smog, look around and see people drinking bottled water, look down and see litter strewn about. We are the custodians of the earth; if we don't take care of it, it won't take care of us. Garth Turner -- Liberals Continued from page 11 Liberals will bring in a massive personal tax cut, and shift this burden onto the shoulders of corporate polluters. We will make RESPs tax-deductible, get budgets back into surplus, invest in secure new innovative jobs, drop business taxes, bring in a drug plan, help consumers save energy costs, support students, better control gas prices and ensure everyone's better off. Personally, my own fight for family income-splitting, real estate stability, better child care, lower taxes and less government will continue. It's time for hope. Robert Wagner -- NDP Continued from page 11 · Makes polluters pay for the real costs of pollution through a cap-and-trade system -- in line with the European Union and the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. · Helps families get onboard the new sustainable economy with a green-collar jobs fund. ·Provides almost $1 billion a year for public transit and an energy efficiency retrofit program. · Halts new tar sands development until emissions are capped. · Implements a new energy economy strategy, and more. New Democrats have a plan that will work -- a plan that sets absolute pollution targets by law, makes big polluters pay, and invests in green solutions. © Tim Hortons, 2007 Think Green. Breathe Easy.
