The cats, mostly seven-week-old domestic short hairs, were brought in to the humane society last week, by a pair of out-oftowners who said they discovered them in the dumpster, located behind Whole Foods Market on Cornwall Road. The new additions are placing an even greater strain on the Oakville animal shelter, which is already operating over capacity after rescuing 53 Bengal cats from an apparent breeding operation, last month. Animal Care Manager Andrea Barker noted that while adoptions and participation in the shelter's foster parents plan are on the rise, the continuous influx of new animals has meant that little headway has been made in reducing the shelter's pet population. The Oakville and District Humane Society shelter on Cornwall Road can house 160 cats comfortably, but currently still has around 400 in its care. The cats are now housed in just about every room at the shelter, including the hallways and the washrooms. The shelter is also renting two trailers to house some of the cats. Barker noted the 16 most recent arrivals are in good health and said she does not know the reason why they were abandoned. Unfortunately, she adds, this isn't a rare occurrence. "People will have a couple of cats in their house and they don't realize how young they can start breeding. They can start at under a year of age," said Barker. "They also don't realize that once a mother cat's litter is five or six weeks old she'll be receptive to getting pregnant again. So, if you have two adult females, suddenly you've got three or four litters on the ground and you've got way more than you're able to care for or pay for." As people pass on such mistakes in pet care to the humane society, the burden of providing food, shelter and medicine is also passed on, but with so many to care for help is desperately needed. The Oakville and District Humane Society is looking for people willing to adopt or take cats into their homes as part of the foster parents plan. Cash donations are also being sought along with Yesterday's News Kitty Litter, which the shelter spends hundreds of dollars on each week. This particular brand is necessary to keep down disease in the shelter. Ongoing donations of just $10 per month will help the humane society continue to rescue animals in distress.
