www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday September 27, 2008 - 15 Halton candidates have arts connections By Tina Depko OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Halton candidates butted heads for the second time in a week at an all-candidates meeting on Friday morning. A crowd of about 40 rose bright and early to hear Liberal candidate and incumbent Garth Turner, Conservative candidate Lisa Raitt and Green party candidate Amy Collard debate which party is tops and who would best represent the region in Parliament. NDP candidate Robert Wagner was not present. The event, hosted by the Canadian Federation of University Women Oakville and Advancement of Women Halton, ran with tight time restrictions. Candidates were given one minute to answer questions asked by audience members through an open mic session. The time guidelines allowed many issues to be addressed during the debate, including the economy, arts and culture funding, electoral reform, accountable government, homelessness, infrastructure and health care. Friday's debate reflected national federal election news, where arts and culture funding has been pushed from the backburner into the spotlight. The issue was front and centre at the event, with politicians drawing on personal experience to demonstrate their artistic sides. Turner cited his eight books and experience running a television production company, saying it has given him an up close and personal look at the arts. He alluded to comments made earlier this week by Stephen Harper that "ordinary people" are not sympathetic to artists who attend extravagant galas, "claiming their subsidies aren't high enough." "I've been in the cultural industry for a number of years as an entrepreneur and I'll tell you, we need governments that understand these are real jobs. These are not people who put on tuxedos, flip their hair back and put some glitter on and go to a gala. The prime minister is completely out to lunch on that," said Turner. "These are real jobs writers, musicians, photographers, videographers, producers. These are jobs that add to the economy."
