14 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 3, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Board seeks input on overcrowded elementary schools in Ward 4 The Halton District School Board has begun consultation on program and accommodation in Oakville Ward 4 elementary schools, including Abbey Lane, Captain R. Wilson, Emily Carr, École Forest Trail, Heritage Glen, Pilgrim Wood and West Oak Public Schools. This consultation process gives public school supporters and parents a chance to have input into how to deal with the rapid growth and population shifts in this area of Oakville. Some elementary schools in Ward 4 are experiencing growth and resulting enrolment pressures, while other schools are experiencing decreasing enrolment. One such school is the single-track French Immersion school, École Forest Trail. The consultation process is set out in three stages: 1) Information Sharing and Feedback from Community, School Councils and Staff: On Sept. 15 public school supporters within Oakville's Ward 4 were mailed a package of information including an overview of the consultation process, a feedback form for input, and a request to participate in a focus group. Parents who did not receive a package should contact their elementary school principal. Oakville Ward 4 School Councils have also been invited to submit input. Both the feedback form and the focus group participation form must be returned by Oct. 7. These forms can be returned to any Oakville Ward 4 public elementary school, or to the Halton District School Board's J.W. Singleton Education Centre at 2050 Guelph Line, Burlington, Ontario L7R 3Z2. All data gathered through these forms will be reviewed and analysed by Board staff, and posted on the Board website (www.hdsb.ca). 2) Consultation with Public School Supporters, School Councils and Staff. In the second stage of the consultation process, several focus groups will be held in November to gather information. Parents and public school supporters can indicate their intent to participate in a focus group, by returning their Focus Group Return Forms by Oct. 7. 3) Director's Report, Delegations and Board Vote. The final stage of the consultation process will involve a review of all relevant data and information by the Director of Education. The Director will release a report in mid-December outlining the program plan for all Ward 4 Oakville elementary schools for the 2009-2010 school year and beyond. This report will be shared with trustees and posted on the Board website (www.hdsb.ca). In early January 2009, trustees of the Halton District School Board will hear delegations from parents and community members regarding the report's recommendations. Trustees are scheduled to discuss and vote on the matter. on Jan. 21.
