www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 3, 2008 - 33 Be E-ware at the Oakville library this month s the fall evenings close in why not spend some time either on your own, or as a family, discovering the wide variety of free online databases that Oakville Public Library (OPL) offers and win some cool prizes? During October, OPL is highlighting the excellent collection of free online databases that are just a fingertip away and available 24/7 through our website at www.opl.on.ca. From our homepage, click on `Research' and then `Databases,' to see the full and comprehensive list of topics. If you are not in one of our six branches across Oakville, you will be asked to enter your library card number, so make sure you have your free OPL card with you at all times. With help and information on everything from business to parenting, online databases really are an efficient way of keeping yourself current, helping your children A with projects or deciding which TV to buy for the family. Cynthia Perry, online resources librarian at OPL, wants all customers to be aware of just how much free information is available. "Online research databases from the Oakville Public Library's website offer access to thousands of credible, citable, current and historical sources and formats, all for free. The E-wareness campaign promotes the use of these electronically-accessible newspapers, mag- azines, encyclopedias, business directories and eBooks," said Perry. To encourage our customers to discover the abundance of free information within the databases and to experience just how easy it is to do, we are holding a competition to win some very cool prizes, including a Wii gaming system, a laptop, a digital camera and a DVD player. From Oct. 1 to 31, enter our ballot online by clicking the Ewareness logo located on the homepage or visit your local branch for a paper ballot. Use our online databases to answer a few questions correctly and the winner could be you! As we like to play fair here at the library, we also have a separate ballot with questions suitable for those who are 12 years old and under, so our younger customers can also participate. E-wareness Month is a HALINET (Halton Information Network) collaboration, a joint partnership of information and education providers whose goal is to raise awareness of online information resources available free of charge in the Halton region. Local libraries are promoting E-wareness to all residents and both public and separate schools are enabling students with the knowledge and tools to access the online databases and become research-savvy. For more information about the Ewareness Month and our online ballot, contact Cynthia Perry, Online Resources Librarian for the Oakville Public Library at 905-815-2042, ext. 5901.
