4- The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 8, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com THANKSGIVING SPECIAL AT DIETRICHS PLEASELL A PLACERS IN ORDE NCE ADVA MAKE YOUR Jail-A-Thon will raise money for Crime Stoppers Oakville Mayor Rob Burton will join other politicians and local business owners at a Jail-A-Thon at Hopedale Mall to raise money for Halton Crime Stoppers. The event will be held Friday, Oct. 17 and Saturday, Oct. 18 in the mall's indoor courtyard. The mayor will act as a judge while Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn will be going behind bars with Rodney Fairborn, the Hopedale Mall manager and Jay Lockwood, owner of J. Lockwood Chrysler. Halton Police Chief Gary Crowell, along with staff from St. Ignatius of Loyola High School, St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Abbey Park High School and White Oaks Secondary School, as well as Suzanne Gilbert, the manager of security at Sheridan College are among others being locked up to raise money for Crime Stoppers. Tom Suddaby, the chair of Halton Crime Stoppers, said this is the largest fundraising initiative the program is undertaking this year and board members hope the public will make donations so those volunteering to be jailbirds won't have to spend too much time in the makeshift jail, which will be set up in the mall's courtyard area. Suddaby said there will be mock trials where Burton and other judges, including Oakville resident Bob Youngs, will pass sentence on individuals facing charges ranging from instigating learning and cramming knowledge to occupying the legislature and bill passing. "Although we are hoping to do some serious fundraising to cover the cost of operating Crime Stoppers, we want all those involved to have fun," he said. "We decided on the Jail-A-Thon to put fun into fundraising." Halton police Sgt. Gary Gold, the co-ordinator of Crime Stoppers, said the program was forced through belt tightening over the past couple of years to cut back on some promotional efforts, but during that time has managed to continue operating at a high level and has produced some record results. Gold added there is still an opportunity for others to participate as jailbirds and assist with the fundraising. Anyone interested in assisting should contact the Crime Stoppers office at 905-825-4747, ext. 5139.
