14 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 10, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Petroleum fire training invaluable for recruits Continued from page 1 petroleum fires and we're finishing up with a two day session for the recruits," said Rich Rattray, Site Manager, for the Petro Canada facility. "We gave them all theory yesterday and today is hands on." Essentially an enclosed pen containing various metal pipes the simulator pumps out fuel to simulate a spill. A Petro Canada employee, completely clad in fire protection gear, then adds the flame to give firefighters a taste of what it's like to fight a real petroleum fire. While the situation may be controlled, the fire is still real and those standing even 30 feet away can feel its extreme heat. As such the recruits take the exercise very seriously and are dressed from head to toe in the protective gear. This includes a breathing apparatus to combat the fire's thick smoke. Petro Canada employees, who have had spe- cial training for dealing with petroleum fires, are also on hand and periodically give the recruits advice on how to properly tackle the blaze. This training course is the result of a partnership between the Oakville Fire Department and Petro Canada that has lasted more than 20 years and is still going strong as both parties have something to gain. Petro Canada gets a fire department that will know what to do in the event that a fire really does take place within their facility. "Structural firefighters don't train in this type of scenario just like we don't train in structural fires, so for them to be able to come in and familiarize themselves with the actual equipment and familiarize themselves with us to me speaks volumes," said Rattray. "This training is focusing on the high probability. If they come into this plant, chances are, this is what they're going to come in to, so we have a simulated pump fire and a simulated pan fire (spill)." LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER HEAT OF THE MOMENT: Firefighting recruits undergo a training exercise at the Petro Canada distribution facility. The Oakville Fire Department gets to confront its recruits with a fire, the magnitude of which they might not otherwise see until placed in an emergency situation. "This is the confidence builder," said Oakville Fire Chief Richard Boyes, as he watched his recruits extinguish yet another gargantuan fire. "If they know they can handle this the real life events are not a big deal." For the recruits themselves, the experience is intense, with each member rotating to the front of the hose, only feet from the inferno. "It's incredibly exciting. We've been chasing this dream for a while so the chance to feel some live fire and throw some water on it is an amazing feeling," said Christopher Day, Oakville Fire Department recruit. "You feel a mixture of feelings, it's exciting, there's a danger factor that kind of gets your adrenaline running, but then there's also a trust factor out there too. You trust every guy you're working with because you know that everyone is working together to keep you safe. There's a really strong bond out there."
