I am inspired by young Oakville. On Sept. 28, 17 teams, each with four humans, participated in the Amazing Race Against Time, raising more than $7,000. A round of elephant trumpeting for Jill Zimmerman and her team. Congrats to the four winning teams: Hilary, Brett, Elyse and Cedric from the Fantastic Four in first place; Adie, Kathrine, Jill and Amanda from the Highlighters in second; Emily, Kiersten, Emma and Christine from The Rockets in third; and Brad, Michael, Carl and Ahmed (minus one who was sick) from the UN Crew in fourth. From the opening puzzle to the final clues, the teams -- teens to those in their early 20s -- worked hard racing between Appleby College and downtown Oakville. Aissatou Diajhate of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, brought congratulations after the barbecue courtesy of M&M Meats. (I preferred shrubbery at Appleby near the lake tasty leaves.) The human participants and volunteers were thanked for their important efforts to help with the AIDS crisis in Africa. Such commitment brought a tear of gratitude to my elephant eye. Did you know that elephants can count and figure out small arithmetic addition problems? Human scientists have observed elephants counting apples in a basket and choosing a fuller basket when apples are added. I need to count to 36 to support the next $Million Or More Oakville ($MOMO) event: Metres or More. The challenge is to fill a metre of red ribbon with 36 toonies by the end of October -- $72 for each metre. One or two toonies a day will make it easy to afford, I think. An entire kilometre of ribbon would result in a $72,000 donation to $MOMO's target of $1 million for the Stephen Lewis Foundation. You can pick up your one or more metres of red ribbon at the Courtesy Desk at Oakville Place. Great support from the a shopping centre I think. All your ribbons will be displayed on Saturday, Oct. 25. Imagine how proud you will be if Oakville achieves the $72,000 goal.
