www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 10, 2008 - 19 Food for all O ctober has brought a nip to the air and the rustle of dried leaves to Oakville sidewalks. Around town, friends and families anticipate the celebration of Thanksgiving. Stores are busy as people shop for fresh and wholesome food to prepare a Thanksgiving dinner. Sadly, this is not the case for all Oakville residents. Fresh and nutritious foods are not available to all people at Thanksgiving nor at other times during the year. Some may not be able to afford good food and others may not be able to get out to the markets on a regular basis to shop for food. Food for Life collects and delivers surplus perishable food from supermarkets and restaurants and delivers the food to 40 local social service agencies such as food banks and shelters. Additionally, Food for Life establishes outreach programs in low income and subsidized housing neighbourhoods by providing food worth $25 to $50 each week to more than 200 families. "We collect baked goods, produce, occasional meats and dairy products from local supermarkets and other suppliers. Our emphasis is on fresh food that we can deliver quickly to those in need," explains Food for Life Executive Director Charlotte Redekop-Young. Founded in 1995, Food for Life has distributed more than $700,000 of food each year with a mission of ensuring that no person should have to go hungry while stores, restaurants and other food suppliers are tossing food into landfills. "It really is a win-win situation," says Redekop-Young. "Our recipients improve their diets with nutritious meals, our suppliers save on disposal costs and good food is diverted from landfills," she said. Food for Life is one of the more than 30 human and social service agencies funded by United Way of Oakville. United Way funds agencies and programs with an emphasis on prevention and crisis intervention. This balance allows United Way to help maintain the ongoing health of Oakville and to provide support to those in the greatest need.
