Mike Harris' Oakville Curling Club rink, which includes local resident John Base, posted a 7-5 victory over Rob Lobel's Thornhill entry in its opening game. Other notable skips that won their first games were Guy Hemmings, Wayne Middaugh and Kerry Burtnyk. The BDO Curling Classic, which features 32 of the top teams in Canada, will continue through Monday. LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER Fifth cross-country title for Our Lady of Peace student Rachel Bronzovich finished her Catholic elementary school crosscountry running tenure the same way she began it -- on top. The Our Lady of Peace student won the midget girls' A division at the Halton Catholic District School Board's elementary cross-country meet last week at Bronte Creek Provincial Park, her fifth division title in as many years. Bronzovich's victory helped Our Lady of Peace claim the midget girls' Division A team title. The school also won the atom girls' Division B, tyke girls' Division D and bantam boys' Division B crowns. Other local schools to win division pennants included St. Bernadette (mite boys' Division A and tyke boys' Division C), St. Joan of Arc (mite girls' Division A and tyke boys' Division A), St. Vincent (mite boys' Division B), St. Joseph (mite boys' Division C and tyke girls' Division A), St. Matthew (tyke boys' Division B), St. Marguerite D'Youville (atom girls' Division C) and Mother Teresa (midget boys' Division B).
