Admiral Horatio Nelson's name was known all over the British Empire. At the same time, Halton County, on the shores of Lake Ontario, was being surveyed for pioneer settlement. Place names were needed and what better names than those associated with the popular hero, who had just died in the midst of his most important victory? Townships were named Nelson and Trafalgar, the name of the battle. The settlement at the mouth of the Twelve-Mile Creek was named Bronti, or Bronte, after Nelson's title, Duke of Bronte. The Bronte Historical Society holds a celebration each year in late October, near the date of Nelson's famous victory. Two years ago in Britain, there were huge festivities on the two hundredth anniversary of what was termed "the battle that changed the world". In 2008, it recognizes the 250th anniversary of Nelson's birth. This year, the society celebrates the event on the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 19. They will serve hot apple cider, tea and victory rum cake. The cake hints at the rum rations given to British sailors and sometimes referred to as "Nelson's blood".
