26 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 17, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Time to bookmark Library Week celebration O akville Public Library (OPL)is inviting you to help kick off Ontario Public Library Week 2008 in Oakville on Sunday, Oct. 19. We will be celebrating Customer Appreciation Day on Sunday at all our branches by offering free Starbucks coffee, free juice, cookies and apples, a $10 fine amnesty and many great giveaways. Senior library staff and library board members will be there to meet and greet customers so make sure you visit your branch between 1- 5 p.m. The purpose of library week is to celebrate libraries of all types across Canada and the ability to access the world through the interconnectivity of libraries. An annual fall event, Ontario Public Library Week was first announced by the province in 1985 and has since become the focus for promoting public library services in Ontario. OPL recently received the only `A' grades in the Community Foundation of Oakville's Vital Signs report, an initiative that assessed many areas of Oakville, from services to the environment. It is important that we recognize the excellent service our library and other libraries across Ontario provide within their communities. To celebrate, take a look at what is going on at OPL for this Public Library Week. We are very excited to welcome hugely popular children's performer, Kathy Reid-Naiman to Central Branch as she holds a free concert for pre-schoolers. Her songs, with their fun and folky sound will have your little ones offer code 0001244 enthralled. This free Tickles and Tunes concert will take place on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 10 a.m. at Central Branch on the Children's Floor. For our older youths and adults, we have a special guest speaker on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in our Central Branch. Famous for his hugely popular radio program The Ongoing History of New Music, Alan Cross knows more about the history of alternative rock than anyone else on the planet. No matter what your age or taste in music, the fascinating stories behind the bands, producers, singers and songs will have you thinking about music in a whole new way. Sold out already due to high demand, it is sure to be a fantastic evening. For our Oakville teens, we round off Public Library Week by offering a Teen Poetry Workshop, hosted by well known Toronto fiction writer, poet and editor Stuart Ross. Those who register will meet other poets, improve their writing skills and get some great new ideas from an experienced poet. The workshop takes place at Central Branch Auditorium, from 1-4 p.m. and is free, but participants must register in advance by phoning our Teen Services Librarian Elise C. Cole at 905-8152042, ext. 5037 or by e-mailing ecole@oakville.ca.
