www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 17, 2008 - 37 Arts contest for refugee and immigrant stories Hundreds of thousands of people have come to Canada over the years as immigrants or refugees and most have fascinating stories to tell. The same goes for native-born Canadians who have helped immigrants settle in their new homeland. Refugees and immigrants have included black slaves from the U.S. who, thanks to the Underground Railroad in the second half of the 19th century, found refuge in Canada. The first large group from a single country that Canada accepted after World War II was the 40,000 Hungarians who came here after the 1956 revolution. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the "Prague Spring" after which 11,000 refugees arrived in Canada. In 1972, about 5,000 Asians expelled from Uganda by Idi Amin were taken in. Others included Americans who did not want to fight in Vietnam; Chileans in 1974 who fled when their regime changed and more than 50,000 Vietnamese "boat people" who came to Canada in 1979-80. In the 1980s and 1990s, groups of Somalis, Iranians, Iraqis, Chinese, and many others from trouble spots around the world arrived on Canada's shores. To examine aspects of the refugee or immigrant experience from a personal perspective, the Canada Hungary Educational Foundation (CHEF), through its web project Hungarianpresence.ca, is holding an essay/video competition for Canadian high school and post-secondary students under the age of 25. The competition is entitled "Becoming Canadian -- A Celebration of Refugee and Immigrant Experiences in Canada." Eligible students are encouraged to submit entries in the form of an essay, a piece of short fiction, or a video. The deadline for the competition is Oct. 31, 2008, and first prize is $1,000 in each age category. Contest details, rules and the entry form are on the website www.hungarianpresence.ca.
