www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 22, 2008 - 29 Walker has acting bug and a knack for the stage Continued from page 28 "I brainstorm and try to think what [the character] is thinking at the beginning and at the end, and I think it just comes out like that," he explained. The play doesn't have a closing date set, and Heidi figures he will be in it at least until after Christmas, depending on whether or not his voice changes. Landing a role in the show seems like a natural progression for Walker. He caught the acting bug early when he started performing in plays at his Oakville elementary school, Rother Glen. He had a knack for the stage, starring in roles in productions like Oliver, The Sound of Music, Wizard of Oz and Mary Poppins. His interest was first sparked in Grade 3 when his mom asked if he wanted to take an acting class. He loved it and his passion for acting grew. At nine years old, he asked his parents to hire him an agent. At first he was more interested in being involved in commercials, but after his first audition for a theatre production, he knew he had found his calling. Once he finished elementary school, he chose to enroll at the Etobicoke School of the Arts to focus on acting as there is no arts school available in Oakville, Heidi noted. The high school allows the students to choose a major and make their electives fit with their area of interest. Walker, not surprisingly, chose drama as his major. He attends a drama class every morning, with his electives following suit with visual arts, dancing, music, musical theatre and film. "There is probably at least 30 kids from Oakville that go there," explained Heidi. "They all take the GO trains." It takes Walker approximately 40 minutes to get to school every morning, half hour on the train and a 10minute bus ride to the school. "You really have to want to go there," Heidi said with a laugh. The roles Walker most enjoys playing are dramatic ones. "I don't know why, but I think it's really want to do this," he said. "I more challenging, and I like to would also like to do a bit of film, but morph a character and it's easier to my first love is theatre." do with a dramatic role," he And being chosen out of thouexplained. Spencer finds the most rewarding part of acting is being up on the stage. "When I get out on stage, it just kind of feels like the audience isn't there anymore," he said. "I like that feeling. It just feels like I'm doing it for me." He also finds that acting has led him to meet a lot of people and develop many friendships. "I know tons of people through acting," he said. "I have friends from Vancouver to P.E.I." Walker said he hopes to continue with stage acting and see how far he can take it. "I know it won't be easy, but I sands of hopefuls, it is clear theatre loves him back. For information about The Sound of Music, visit www.mirvish.com.
