www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 24, 2008 - 27 Youth on peace centre's new board The Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights (OCCPEHR) elected a new board of directors at its recent annual general meeting. Youth is well represented on the new board, according to Stephen Dankowich, executive director of OCCPEHR. "The 2008-2009 Board includes returning members Joe Di Paolo, Sina Petrovic and Mervyn Russell. New board members include Pam Schoeman, Sigrid Kajiwara, Navid Mirza and Jacob Jablonski," said Stephen Dankowich, executive director of OCCPEHR. "Our board is much more representative of our community in its new composition," said Mervyn Russell, chairperson. "Youth will be well served by Navid, a student at Iroquois Ridge High School who will reach out to other public high schools while Jacob, a student at Holy Trinity Secondary School, will connect with Catholic school board students and Pam, a student of illustration at Sheridan College, will network with area college students. Sigrid has been our earth week clean up coordinator in southeast Oakville since 2007 and will assist us in expanding this program to more neighbourhoods and schools in 2009," said Russell. Sue Carduelis and Philip Allister who have stepped down from the board and will be greatly missed. "We want to continue strengthening our board to increase our ability to best serve the needs of our community," said Russell, "and so we welcome you to express your interest in joining our board." "This year, we are maintaining our extensive program of events and activities (Halton Eco Festival on April 18, 2009; Earth Week Clean Up on April 25, 2009; free monthly public forums; annual peace concert now renamed Words and Music for Peace on Nov. 5, 2008; solidarity with native peoples; and our websites). Also, we are now transforming our organization into a community group that is much more responsive and representative of the increasingly diverse population that now is Oakville," said Russell.
