Phantoms add to hardware The Oakville Phantoms added one more title to their banner season. The under-17 girls Ontario Cup champions edged Cap-Rouge/St-Augustin in a shootout to win the inauguaral Quebec-Ontario Cup in Laval, Quebec. After splitting their games with the Quebec champions, the teams went to a shootout where the Phantoms prevailed with a 4-2 victory. Oakville recorded a 2-0 victory while CapRouge/St-Augustin won 6-0 to even the series. Oakville was one of five teams to compete at the event but was the only Ontario team to win a championship. Athletics (OUA) baseball all-star team. Salmon, a fourth-year outfielder for the Western Mustangs, was a second-teamer last season. Coach Award Youngsters coached by Norma Petriska see improvement to not only their skating skills, but also their self esteem and confidence. Petriska has worked with hundreds of skaters over the years, at all levels, as she has mastered the proper balance of patience and technical knowledge. She coaches a number of synchronized skaters, helping them balance their individual development with the requirements of their team programs. In addition to serving as the coaches' representative on the Oakville Skating Club board, she is a regular volunteer at almost all club events. Oakville Little League Volunteer Award The efforts of Andrea Fairweather enabled Oakville Little League to successfully host the 2008 Canadian Senior Championships, where teams from across the country competed for the right to play in the Little League World Series. Locals named OUA ball all-stars Andrew Salmon and Matt Bekar of Oakville have been named to the Ontario University Tuesday at Crosswinds Golf Club in Burlington to help the University of Toronto Blues win the OUA golf championship. Samuel, who shot a 78 on the opening day of the tournament and finished seventh in the individual standings, and teammates Daly Kim, Nick Clark, Adrian Cord and Mark Bania had a two-day team total of 621 to edge Waterloo by two shots. Oakville Minor Lacrosse Association Volunteer Award A former player in the Oakville Minor Lacrosse Association, Scott Smith has dedicated a large part of his life to giving back to the organization. He has served as a coach, referee, equipment manager and convener, and has always seemed to appear at registration sessions, clinics and other events. Oakville Speed Skating Club Individual Award Patrick Duffy continues to work towards his goal of making the Canadian Olympic speed-skating team. The 17-year-old has been an elite skater since the age of 10, and has regularly been selected to represent the province at the Canadian and North American championships. He has medaled in every age class he has competed in at events across the continent, is currently a member of the elite Provincial Ontario Training Squad and was a recipient of Olympic Quest for Gold sponsorship, reserved for the sport's most promising and gifted athletes. Kos has been the vice president of the club for the past several years, also serving as meet co-ordinator. At a minimum, she volunteers 15-20 hours a week during the winter season and 5-10 hours a week during the offseason. Kos is also a certified Level 1 coach.
