4- The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 24, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Selling parks isn't livable for residents Continued from page 1 and Heath Street area, noted that the area has great value to the community with children playing there almost every day. He also pointed out that the parkette is used for community gatherings with crowds flocking there for such celebrations as Canada Day. "This public parkland should not be offered to developers or become development at any time. This would not only devalue properties, but would jam more housing side by side," said Pink in a delegation to council. "Such rezoning in our HARDWOOD LIQUIDATION 200,000 sq. ft. in stock GORILLA WATCH FOR THE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC No Payment No Interest Till Spring 2009 (oac) opinion would turn this area into a less attractive place to locate. We understand the need for revenue, but this should not come at the expense of families and children." Dave Laing who lives by the Odessa Parkette, located in the Odessa Crescent and Oxford Avenue area, noted that this is not the first time residents have had to approach council to save their beloved green space. "In the summer of 1982 this same property was discussed as a source of revenue for the Town of Oakville," said Laing. "I presented a petition at that time, the neighbours attended, some of whom are here again, and in this same chamber the council voted to keep Odessa Parkette as green space. I'm again requesting that you keep Odessa Parkette as green space." Heath Parkette supporter Richard Bowie also called on council to reverse its decision and pointed out that to do otherwise would be very hypocritical given image the Town is Do Not P "This should not happen in a town this council wants to become, and I quote, "the most livable town in Canada." Richard Bowie, Oakville resident trying to project. "This should not happen in a town this council wants to become, and I quote, `the most livable town in Canada," said Bowie. "We keep hearing that these green spaces are important in our further development. Why then are these ones being taken away?" In the end the fact that the parkettes were placed on the list of surplus lands in the first place was ruled an error with some councillors noting they would not have voted to put the parkettes on that list if reports had been clearer about what they were. "Perhaps our methodology in the case of these two could have been better," said Ray Green, Chief Administrative Officer, Town of Oakville. Besides taking the parkettes off the list of surplus lands and having staff bring forward an amendment to rezone them as public open space, council also passed an amendment to improve public notification rules when it comes to the declaring of surplus land. Ward 5 Councillor Jeff Knoll noted that some residents had no idea the parkettes had been voted surplus until surveyors were seen examining the land. With the motions passed Mayor Rob Burton turned his attention to the 40 residents present. "On behalf of council I'd like to apologize to the neighbours of both parkettes and to tell you that we deeply regret the error that was made and we thank you for bringing it to council's attention," said Burton.
