www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 24, 2008 - 5 Doctor shortage topic of discussion Nov. 20 The president of the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) will be in Oakville to discuss the doctor shortage on Thursday, Nov. 20. Dr. Ken Arnold will be the guest speaker at the next Canadian Club of Halton Peel dinner at the Oakville Conference Centre. The OMA represents Ontario's 25,000 doctors and is a leading advocate for excellence in patient care. Despite improvements made to the health system over the last decade, significant challenges remain for more than 850,000 people in Ontario who cannot find a family doctor. Arnold, a family physician practising in Thunder Bay, will discuss the reasons for the doctor shortage and what actions need to be taken to address this serious issue. Arnold will share the latest research on the impact of not having a family doctor -- what it means for patients, what it means for the health care system as a whole, and what it means for communities at large. Arnold is the Ontario Medical Association's 127th president. A general practitioner, he completed his degree in medicine in 1971 at Queen's University in Belfast, U.K. Throughout his years in practice, Arnold has been a strong voice for the medical community and patients. In 1996, he served as president of the Thunder Bay Medical Society and since 2005 has served as the Governor of the Ontario Medical Foundation. Registration and a cash bar start at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Cost for members is $30, $40 for non-members and $15 for students. Reservations are required. For more information or to reserve seats, call Barry Wylie at 905827-6302 or e-mail bwylie@globalserve.net. The first not-for-profit, non-political, non-denominational Canadian Club was formed in Hamilton in 1893. The Canadian Club of Halton Peel, with 200 members, has been presenting notable guest speakers covering a wide range of topics since 1986.
