www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday October 25, 2008 - 33 Burloak had to send burgee back Correction of points calculation error costs canoe club national title Bummer. That was the word of choice around the Burloak Canoe Club recently after a disappointing phone call from CanoeKayak Canada (CKC). Burloak appeared to have won the team title at the CKC Sprint National Championships in Dartmouth last month, edging out the host Banook Canoe Club by 23 points (678-655). But the phone call, which came several weeks later, said different. "They gave us a call and said `Sorry, bring the burgee back'," said Burloak commodore Jim Reardon, whose son Brady was one of four Burloak athletes that competed at this year's Olympic Summer Games and then rushed off to compete in the national club championships a few days later. "We had to package it all up and courier it back to the Banook Canoe Club." As it turned out, CKC had discovered an error in the overall points calculation that had shortchanged Banook by 30 points. The adjustment meant Banook ended up with seven more points than Burloak. Disappointing "We went through the points and double-checked, and it turned out they were right," said Reardon. "Obviously we were bummed out a little bit -- everybody's using that phrase, it's pretty generic. We recognize that Nanook actually had more points than us and we accept that, and we don't begrudge them for it. But it's a little disappointing to have thought we won and then have it pulled away from us." Burloak's Adam van Koeverden, a silver-medalist in Beijing, said losing the burgee doesn't detract from the achievements of the club's athletes in Dartmouth. "Unfortunately, sometimes even the best technology fails, but it doesn't take any of our great races away," he said. "Nobody lost a gold medal. Every individual that did fantastically to earn that burgee still did fantastically. It will give us more fuel for the fire next year." -- Jon Kuiperij PARTNERS SUCCESS IN ATHENA OAKVILLE SPONSOR PROFILE Celebrating the potential of all women as valued members and leaders of the community, and recognizing those who support them, ATHENA Oakville enters it's twelfth year.
