Vol. 47 No. 130 By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Scary cheerleader Council rejects transitional housing plea for barracks Oakville's two Ward 5 councillors found themselves at odds with the rest of council last week over the fate of the mostly abandoned military housing complex located in the area of Dorval Drive and Rebecca Street. Ward 5 Councillor and President of the Halton Community Housing Corporation Jeff Knoll found himself fighting most of his council colleagues following the deferral of a Regional motion that called for the temporary use of up to three houses within the Ortona Barracks as transitional housing for needy Halton families. Town councillors, with the exception of Ward 5 councillors Knoll and Marc Grant, also passed a motion last week advising the Region not to make any long-term commitments concerning the military housing complex until the Town completes a review of the situation. At the heart of the matter is a fear such a project would interfere with the Town's own plans for the area, once the complex is finally surrendered by the federal government. "We have always wanted and have tried very hard to work with the federal government to redevelop this site and rejuvenate it," said Ward 2 Councillor Cathy Duddeck.
