For the past decade, Halton high school senior boys' volleyball has been dominated by the Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils and the Georgetown Rebels, who split the last 10 titles between them. History alone was enough to make OT an overwhelming favourite in Monday's Division 1 final at Sheridan College. "It's always daunting coming up against OT," said Trinity coach Melissa Olmstead. "They're skilled and they're powerful and they're hard to match when they get momentum." Instead, it turned out it was the Titans that were able to seize the momentum, after losing the opening set in a manner that could have easily broken their spirit. Trinity rallied for a 24-26, 25-14, 15-11 victory to capture its first senior boys' volleyball title. "It's overwhelming," Trinity's Travis James said as his team celebrated the victory. "Words can't describe this. We worked so hard for this." The Titans hope they aren't done yet. Trinity will host a Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference championship game Friday against Hamilton's Cathedral (a 3 p.m. start), with the winner advancing to represent the region at next week's provincial AAAA championships in Barrie. Monday, the Titans trailed for only two points in the entire match, but those were a critical two points. Trinity built a commanding 19-12 lead in the opening set, thanks to strong blocking by James and wellplaced hits by Vince Cambruzzi. However, led by Kevin Houston, OT rallied to take eight of the next 10 points to close within one. Trinity again looked to have the opener in hand when it led 24-22, but the Red Devils shocked the Titans by taking the last four points. The Titans quickly put that behind them, storming out of the gate in the second game, and by the time James Meschino's ace caught the back line, the Titans were up 92. Though Jamie Brophy and Ryan Vandervliet were each able to spark LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER HANDY MEN: Loyola's Alex Cenedese (centre) and Alex Bider go up to block a bump by Iroquois Ridge's Grant McQueen. Hawks edge out Ridge in junior final After letting a second-set lead slip away, the Loyola Hawks rebounded to claim their first Halton high school junior boys' volleyball title since 1999. In a close deciding set where the teams were never separated by more than three points, the Hawks scored a 15-13 win over the Iroquois Trailblazers, capping a 26-24, 18-25, 15-13 victory Monday at Sheridan College. "That's been the spirit of this team. They don't get down and they don't give up," said Loyola coach Rich Harder. Loyola finished the season 12-1, but was taking nothing for granted. Harder said the team has always performed well during the season but hasn't always been able to translate that success in the playoffs. The Hawks gave a hint of overcoming that by winning one tournament this year and finishing second in another.
