16 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 14, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Public board reschedules public meetings Catholic board settles ESL teaching contract The Halton District School Board has modified its public meetings schedule for December to accomplish more work before the Christmas holidays. The board normally meets the first and third Wednesdays of each month during the school year, and only the first Wednesday in December, but there will be two meetings next month. The school board's annual organizational public meeting, where a new chair and vice-chair of the board of trustees will be elected, is slated for Wednesday, Dec. 3. A special board meeting also has been called for Wednesday, Dec. 10. Both meetings start at 7 p.m. "This additional meeting will allow trustees to deal with timely issues before the holiday break, and receive reports related to decisions facing the board in the new year," said a school board press release. As well, an additional delegations-only meeting is planned for Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009. Trustees are inviting individuals to speak about the consultation process related to a boundaries review of long-term program and accommodation in Oakville's Ward 4. For more information regarding items coming before the board during the next six weeks, visit www.hdsb.ca and click on the agenda packages. They highlight items proposed for the upcoming meetings, as well as outline items coming to future meetings. Complete agenda packages (with reports) are posted the Friday prior to the meeting date. Information on the board's delegation process can be found by reviewing the board's bylaw on delegations, or contacting the education director's office at 905-335-3663. The Halton Catholic District School Board has ratified a four-year settlement with its English as a Second Language (ESL)/Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) instructors, who are members of Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 4605. The agreement covers the period of Sept. 1, 2008 to Aug. 31, 2012. It covers the board's 25 members of CUPE 4605 and provides for a three per cent wage increase during each year of the four years, as well as non-monetary and housekeeping changes to the current collective agreement. Unlike other employee groups, the majority of the funding for these programs comes from the federal government -- Citizenship and Immigration Canada -- rather than the Ontario Ministry of Education. The federal government has indicated that it will fully fund the wage increases that are consistent with the provincial parameters, according to the board. For the Health of Our Community Need New Teeth? We would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank Maiella Contracting Ltd. Every year Maiella Contracting hosts a golf tournament and the proceeds from the tournament are donated to Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Since 1995 this tournament has raised money to help purchase vital medical equipment for our community hospital. A special thank you goes to the tournament host Mr. Gino Masciantonio for his continued support. We would also like to thank the many golfers who have participated in this tournament over the last several years. Community partners, such as Maiella Contracting Ltd. and Mr. Masciantonio help the Oakville Hospital Foundation purchase vital medical equipment which government funding alone cannot provide.
