The 60th anniversary edition of the Oakville Santa Claus parade will begin marching along Lakeshore Road in downtown Oakville at 9 a.m. It will wind its way from Reynolds Street through the downtown along Lakeshore Road before heading north on Kerr Street to Stewart Street before Santa officially climbs down from his sleigh and sets foot into Oakville for Christmas 2008. Once again Mrs. Claus will lead Santa into town as the parade's grand marshall -- rain, shine or snow, and Mrs. Claus is known for keeping Santa on his toes, and his schedule. And while Santa may arrive in his sleigh pulled by reindeer, Mrs. Claus will ride in a Cinderella carriage -- accompanied by Lauren Montanari, 8, who is this year's Oakville Santa Claus Parade colouring contest winner. This 60th edition of the Oakville Santa parade will boast one of the most exciting lineups in the history of the parade -- schools, floats, bands, and costumed entertainers representing numerous local businesses, service clubs, and community groups. This year's theme is A Child's Magical Christmas. As usual, lots and lots of volunteers are pitching in to make the parade happen and be a success -- adding magic to many Oakville children's Christmas. Returning to help are volunteers from many groups including the West River and West Harbour residents' associations, the Civitan Club, Rotary Club and more. No visit from Santa would be complete without marching bands playing the streets of downtown Oakville and Kerr Village on parade day. Returning this year are the popular Hamilton Police Pipe Band, the Optimists Alumni Drum Corps, Merriam Music Percussion Ensemble, HMCS Star and the 540 Air Cadets. The Halton Regional Police Service Pipes & Drums, dressed in their traditional Chisholm tartan, will lead off the parade. The world-famous Top Hat Marching Orchestra from Burlington will join the parade along with the White Oaks Secondary School Marching Band, Burlington's MM Robinson Drumline, Rochester Hit Men Brass Band from Western New York, Prime Time Brass, also of Rochester and the Mighty Marching Jaguars of the Detroit Academy of Arts and Science. Canada Post is also ready to take letters for Santa, so don't forget to bring your letter to Santa. Canada Post will be right ahead of Santa's float. The Oakville Professional Fire Fighters Association has a longtime parade tradition of holding a Toy Drive to benefit kids who may have otherwise not receive gifts for the holidays -- so bring a new, unwrapped toy to the parade and hand it over to the firefighters who will put it in the hands of a child this Christmas. Bring spare change and nonperishable food for the Kinsmen Club of Oakville, whose members will be collecting the food for the Salvation Army Jingle Bell Fund. These items will be collected 15 minutes prior to the parade as well as after Santa's float. In 2007, Oakville residents donated 7,500 pounds of non-perishable food, $4,568.22 in spare change and $3,035 was collected through Red Nose sales by the Fun Group of Families & Friends of Falgarwood. This year the sale of Red Noses will go to Wellspring Halton -- and watch out, Red Noses are only sold by the Fun Group of Families and Friends of Falgarwood. The parade begins at 9 a.m. and the first float should arrive at Lakeshore Road and Navy Street at about 9:20 a.m. -- at Lakeshore and Kerr at 9:30 a.m. and finally at Kerr and Steward at about 9:55 a.m. The further you are along the parade route, the later the parade will start for you. With 50,000 people expected out for the parade, parking will be tight along the parade route. Parade goers can avoid parking jams by taking the free Santa Shuttle, which will run every 15 minutes from the Oakville GO station stopping at all regular stops along Reynolds to the Church/Dunn bus terminal. The Santa Shuttle will run from 8 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. and is provided by Oakville Transit. Park at the Oakville GO, or take a connecting bus to the Oakville GO, and board the Santa Shuttle to the parade. For safety, kids must be taken out of strollers or wagons while on the bus and the strollers folded and wagons placed upright.
