www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 14, 2008 - 35 Past comes to life at OPL O n Nov. 11 every year, the people of Oakville remember those who fought bravely in the First and Second World Wars that changed our country forever. It is a day when we think, not only about the brutalities of war, but the personal costs that run through every war story told. The Oakville at War project, a partnership of Oakville Public Library, the Town of Oakville and the Oakville Museum, was conceived and developed to bring these stories of war to light. The Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate created an exhibition several years ago called Shadows of War: Not So Long Ago in the 20th Century. This exhibition featured donated digital reproductions of war photographs, images and artifacts from citizens of Oakville and war veterans to honour their family and friends, some of whom lost their lives in battle. The Oakville at War project is a virtual version and extension of this exhibition, researched and developed by archivists, historians and curators of Oakville and brought to life online by Online Services at Oakville Public Library. Funded by the Government of Ontario, through the Ministry of Culture, personal experiences of war and the many loved ones who lost their lives in war were commemorated. Many moving experiences of war were captured on film through recent interviews with Oakville war veterans. These interviews capture the time of war not just as a memory, but as something very real, with human experience and emotion. As part of the Oakville at War project, the interviews are also found in the online exhibition at www.oakvilleatwar.opl.on.ca and at TownTV http://www.towntv.ca/ under History and Heritage. A fine example of how a project like Oakville at War can provide important details and knowledge to gain insights into Oakville history is the Cenotaph episode of the Ancestors in the Attic TV series, due to air on History Television on Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. This episode documents a class of Grade 10 Oakville Trafalgar High School (OTHS) students in their quest to retrieve information regarding the lives of the 34 names that appear on their school cenotaph. This means of engaging history students by teacher Pam Calvert, not only motivates interest in history as a subject, but provides students with opportunities to connect with the human stories behind each name. Oakville Public Library provided some of the background research to the history students at OTHS. The Oakville Collection and our online databases are rich with publications, maps, documented stories and more, all relating to the history of Oakville and its community. Visit our Local History and Genealogy section of our website at www.opl.on.ca for more details. The Oakville at War project has many talented people to thank; however, this project would not have been possible without the contributions of Oakville war veterans, their families, and their friends. They have provided the special memories and insights into personal experience of war and its effects on Oakville lives. -- Submitted by the Oakville Public Library Your for Oakville 3531 Wyecroft Rd.
