36 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 14, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Stars Singing for Supper in Oakville By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF TV star Tom Jackson and singers Beverley Mahood and Amanda Stott will be Singing for Supper in Oakville Tuesday, Nov. 25. That's when they'll take the stage at 7 p.m. at St. Jude's Anglican Church downtown Oakville (160 William St.) in a twohour Christmas concert that will be a bid to raise funds for Fareshare food bank. Oakville will be one stop in a cross-Canada Singing for Supper tour that is smaller than its predecessor, Huron Carol, but is hoped Christmas is Coming! g So are your guests! A new shower enclosure is sure to impress. Amanda Stott to hit the right note for hungry families in Oakville. All money raised at the Oakville concert will remain in Oakville -- and Fareshare's volunteer executive director, Dudley Clarke, says more than 300 families are using the local food bank each month. A big part of Clarke's volunteer work in directing the food bank , located on Speers Road, is dispelling the myth that there is no need for a food bank in this affluent town. Tickets to the concert cost $20 each, cash or cheque -- with cheques to be made payable directly to Oakville Fareshare food bank. Clarke said the concert performers are well known, but it's the man behind the show coming to Oakville that's the local story. However, long-time Oakville resident Bob Clark, who is president of Atlas Canada, which makes its headquarters in town, is "the" reason Singing for Supper is stopping in Oakville. According to Dudley Clarke, the Atlas Van Lines president has seen his company involved in Singing for Supper and previously Huron Carol -- providing the trucks to transport equipment to concert venues. Tom Jackson As Clark both lives and works in Oakville, it was he, a member of St. Jude's congregation, who asked Jackson if the concert fundraiser could come here to benefit Fareshare. Jackson is an actor, singer and philanthropist who is beginning his fifth season of Singing for Supper, a national Christmas concert series that is touring 18 cities from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island this year. Jackson's musical advocacy for Canada's less fortunate over 21 years has amassed more than $10 million for food banks, family service agencies and disaster relief. Jackson, who was in the television show North of 60, has received many honours, including the 2007 Gemini Humanitarian Award and the Order of Canada. Last year, $372,000 was raised and 12,128 pounds of food was collected from the Singing for Supper tour. "I feel that as thirst and hunger plunges deeper into the heart of our country, the call rings loud and clear for us to listen to those cries. This tour is our calling -- for those who live to transform a child's tears of sorrow to joyous tears. Now is our chance to stand up and be counted. Singing for Supper is just one way to help those who help others in need," said Jackson. Beverley Mahood Singing for Supper is a twohour concert opening with Manitoba's Amanda Stott and country music star/CMT personality Beverley Mahood. The second hour features Jackson performing with Stott and Mahood and an ensemble of musicians as they deliver classic and contemporary Christmas selections. This is not the first time the trio has collaborated as the performers made hundreds of appearances together on CPR's Holiday Train in 2002 and 2003. Reuniting onstage allows them a chance to connect with each other and with audiences. An autograph session will follow their performance at St. Jude's. Singing for Supper CDs will be sold at the event with $15 from each going to the local host charity. EMI Music Canada will also distribute the CDs at various retail outlets nationwide.
