www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday November 15, 2008 - 21 Gift helps make patients more comfortable Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) is now able to provide an extra measure of comfort to many of its palliative care patients and their families thanks to a $250,000 gift from GlaxoSmithKline. The donation was used to refurbish several patient rooms and a family lounge to meet the needs of OTMH's palliative care patients and their families. "At GlaxoSmithKline, we strive to make a positive impact on the quality of life for Canadians and people around the world," said Paul Lucas, president and CEO of GlaxoSmithKline Inc. (GSK). "For more than a decade, hospice palliative care has been our employees' dedicated cause of choice and we are proud to have partnered with OTMH to improve the hospital's palliative care environment." The goal of the initiative was to create a space for each patient that is as warm, soothing and as comfortable as possible. Palliative patients can spend a long time in hospital with their loved ones keeping vigil for many hours at a time at their bedside or in the lounges. Providing a quiet, attractive, home-like setting can result in a more positive experience for patients and their loved ones. "Pain and symptom management at the end of life requires more just medication and caregiver support," said Dr. Sol Stern, chair of the HHS Palliative Care Committee. "The patient's physical environment can have a tremendous beneficial effect on comfort and quality of life. The kind of surroundings that have been lies." The overall calming ambience of these updated spaces will provide a comforting patient environment at a difficult time of emotional distress and turmoil. Established in 1989, The GlaxoSmithKline Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for Canadians and is committed to finding creative ways to achieve community wellness. The Foundation supports and works with many organizations, primarily in the areas of health care and health promotion, science education, hospice palliative care and patient advocacy. To commemorate the gift to community healthcare, a reception and tour of the refurbished rooms was held to recognize and thank GSK. The Oakville Hospital Foundation raises funds for OTMH. The Foundation strives to ensure local residents have access to the highest quality health care services, which government funding alone can not provide. With the support of event sponsors like GSK, the Foundation works to ensure essential health care services and resources are available today for patients, community and staff and will be there tomorrow to meet the community's growing needs. That's why an integral part of this project was the purchase of eight specialized palliative care beds, designed to improve patient comfort and care. The new beds reduce the chance of falls and offer many features to minimize pressure on skin and body joints for those patients who are confined to a bed for prolonged periods. In addition, each of the five palliative care rooms now includes a reclining chair, comfortable chairs for visitors, window shades and each is decorated in a soft, neutral colour palette. "This is a very unique and special group of patients. We have been challenged to create a setting within our current building that meets the distinct needs of these patients and their families," said John Oliver, HHS president and CEO. "Thanks to this generous donation, we have had the opportunity to create a more comfortable, homelike setting in our palliative care unit. This will truly make a difference to our patients and their fami- FREE SEMINAR Wed, Nov 19, 08 7:45 pm 110 Queen St East, Brampton Cost Discussed Questions Answered y Type 2 Diabetes?
