www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 19, 2008 - 17 Sock monkeys add Sex in the City to downtown fayre Socks can be sexy -- just ask St. Jude's Anglican Church Women (ACW). These women have put hours into preparing some old-fashioned fun for the Saturday, Nov. 22 annual Christmas Fayre at St. Jude's Victoria Hall, 160 William St. The fair will run 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Last year, the event was a big hit thanks to the traditional sock monkey toys made by members of the ACW. This year, a host of special sock monkey characters from Sex in the City will also be for sale. Though the ladies never once officially told The Oakville Beaver the characters are from that particular show -- no need to ruffle ecclesiastical feathers -- the fare for sale will include monkeys impersonating Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Charlotte York, Miranda Hobbes and Mr. Big Preston (John James). There are also a limited number of reindeer, hobbyhorses and sock lions. "This project has taken us all year to create and at last count we had over 100 monkeys made, as well as all of their special friends," said ACW spokesperson Ardyce Warren. "Every monkey, reindeer and lion is different. Some are dressed and some are, more daringly, not," said Warren. The sock monkeys and friends are not the only items featured as there will be home-baked goodies, Christmas and knitted crafts, a silent auction, attic treasures and estate and costume jewellery. "There is definitely something for everyone," said Warren. As many may know, the original sock monkey was made from RedHeel socks and were made by mothers as toys for their children in the early part of the century. Most vintage sock monkeys are dated circa 1950, with many others made in the 1970s. Sock monkeys have had renewed popularity with variety in design, as can be seen with the St. Jude's monkeys, and synthetic materials have replaced old rags, cotton batting and sawdust once used as stuffing. According to Warren, legend has it Its aim is to assist in the upkeep of the church's interior and to answer outside appeals for assistance. Beneficiaries have included: Ian Anderson House, Grace House, Wellspring, St. Matthew House in Hamilton and Salvation Army. St. Jude's ACW has in the past assisted a nurse in training to take a sixmonth journey to Africa to work with children affected by AIDS and helped rebuild a church damaged by fire. "The success of last year's Christmas Fayre featuring our sock monkeys got FAYRE FARE: One of the sock our creative juices flowing and this year monkeys to be sold at St. Jude's Christmas Fayre Saturday. that the women of St. Jude's ACW work hard all year to make money and then give it all away. About 20 members meet in the church library hall 10 times a year to plan fundraising events including two rummage sales and the Christmas Fayre for the specific purpose of giving all the money away. The ACW has a long history of fellowship, companionship and service to St. Jude's and the wider Oakville community. not only will our sock monkeys be returning, they are bringing some very special friends," said Warren. The ACW got into sock monkeys for the fair last year after some members went looking for a new craft to do and took a course at a downtown Oakville quilt shop. They fell in love with the monkeys and this year added fun to the mix. Everyone is invited to St. Jude's for the fair. There will also be a tea room, in which shoppers can relax.
