18 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 26, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Don't forget the seniors on Santa's list By Stephanie Hounsell METROLAND WEST MEDIA GROUP It was a call Tom Chuchmach will never forget. On the other end of the line was a lady whose mother had received a gift through the Be a Santa to a Senior program -- and she couldn't thank Chuchmach enough for the joy it brought. You see, her mother had endured a tough year. As the elderly woman opened that present, it was the first time her daughter saw her smile in about a year. "It can't get any better than that," said Chuchmach, managing director of the local Home Instead Senior Care, which organizes the Be a Santa to a Senior program each year for Halton. "For us to be able to put a smile on someone's face and let them know they haven't been forgotten is worthwhile," Chuchmach said. This is the fourth year the program has been operating in Halton and over those years, nearly 5,000 gifts have been delivered to mostly seniors and some adults in long-term care and supportive housing facilities throughout the region. This year's goal is to have nearly 1,500 seniors presented with gifts. Here's how it works. Participating seniors are asked to give a small "wish list" of what they'd like to receive. Often the items requested are small and simple, such as gift cards, bath products for women and socks for men. Sometimes they're more creative requests, such as a stuffed animal cat or a baseball bloopers DVD. Each request is written on a paper ornament, which is hung on a tree in participating stores and businesses. The public is then invited to take an ornament or two, purchase the item or items on the card, and leave the unwrapped gifts -- with the ornament taped on -- at the original location. Simple as that. The gifts are then collected, wrapped by volunteers and delivered to the seniors. Participating merchants include: Zellers at Hopedale Mall, WalMart of Oakville and Royal Le Page Realty Glen Abbey, Oak Park and Lakeshore.Tree locations are at Zellers at Hopedale Mall and Wal-Mart. The deadline to drop off gifts is Saturday, Dec. 6. The public is invited to help wrap the gifts at a wrapping party that'll be held Sunday, Dec. 7 from 10 a. m. to 3 p.m. in the South Atrium at the Oakville Town Hall on Trafalgar Road. Chuchmach said the program is a great one for families to participate in together, and some offices have stepped up to the plate and have a tree set up so employees can fulfill the wishes. Some people participate in memory of a late parent or grandparent. "It's very easy for people to become attached to this program," Chuchmach said. For information, visit www.beasantatoasenior.com. Staffed by volunteers, the proceeds support the parish's ministry and programs at home and across the world. For many families, buying a tree at St. Cuthbert's has become an annual tradition. "What I like to tell all our parish volunteers is that we are not just selling trees which support the important work we do with children, youth and seniors, we are offering people an experience that their whole family can enjoy," said parish member and volunteer Dave Shuter. St. Cuthbert's is at the corner of Maple Grove and Oakhill, two blocks north of Lakeshore Road East.
