IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA CATHOLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL rainy and cold Saturday morning would normally discourage activities such as this year's Oakville Santa Claus Parade, but on Nov. 15 Loyola Catholic Secondary School showed up smiling. The school, my school, was voted as having Best School Float by the panel of judges for the parade. The float's theme was Santa's Magical Workshop and there was definitely more than magic put in to make it come out as beautiful as it did. It was also nearly impossible to miss the dazzling show put on by Loyola, as student and teacher volunteers came and dressed up to take part in the parade. One of the greatest keys to success for the Loyola Float Committee has been the constant support by an extremely A dition of Great Spirit will undoubtedly be in good hands. Not only were students volunteering to be in the float, but three Grade 9 students -- Vienna Bassan, Claire Jacek and Jessica Allingham -- took on the job of building the float almost entirely themselves -- under the direction of Loyola tech teacher and woodworking maverick, John Kosir. The cosmetology teacher, Bonnie March, and a few of her students even woke up as early as 5:30 a.m. and donated their time to do the makeup of the students and teachers marching in the parade. "The first meeting that I had, there were more than 100 volunteers who showed up for spots [on the committee," explains the head of the Loyola Float Committee, teacher Kathleen Moro. Such an overwhelming response actually led to people having to be turned away. "Quite a good number (of the volunteers) were Grade 9 students," said Moro.
