www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday November 29, 2008 - 5 Patient checked out before treatment complete Continued from page 3 "The only bed that was available was one you could pay $200 for and that's semiprivate and I wasn't covered for that," said Wayne. "I said, `I don't care, pay the $200. I need a bed, I have to get off this cot.'" That afternoon, Wayne was taken up to his semi-private room. To his dismay, the conditions were no better. The walls, he said, were gouged and splattered with unknown substances and the washroom facilities were disgustingly grungy with an overpowering stench of urine throughout the whole room. Despite this, Wayne opted to stay. He put on a pair of headphones to make him oblivious to all around him. This technique lasted for only so long. After the lights went out, Wayne's roommate, an elderly man, who appeared to be suffering from dementia, began ripping apart the adult diaper he was wearing and throwing pieces of it around the room. "His intravenous post was banging around and his oxygen alarm was going off. I collected all my wires and stuff and went around the curtain between us thinking maybe the old guy needed a hand," said Wayne. "When I see him, he's part way on his knees and he's masturbating." Wayne said he did not judge the man's behaviour, as he was unwell, but also had no desire to stay in the room while this was taking place. He went out to the nurse's station, asking for someone to tend to the man. In the meantime, Wayne tried to sleep in the lounge, but noted this place, too, had seen better days. "When my mom passed away, she was on that floor and me and my brother slept in that lounge and it was clean, beautiful, like a hotel room," he said. "Now, it's full of storage stuff, it's not really a lounge anymore and somebody had been urinating on the couches." After failing to fall asleep on one of the lounge's loveseats, Wayne returned to his room where he found the man still fondling himself, at which point Wayne returned to the nurse's station and informed them he was leaving. At Wayne's request, the "This is supposed to be the sanitary place "When you feel you need to protect yourself nurses removed his intra- where we actually fix our people," said from the germs in the hospital something is venous tubes. Some delays in Wayne's treatment followed because he had neither the desire nor the strength to return to OTMH. Cathy said the hospital would not release the Ranging from "You look amazing" antibiotics to her. to "Wowza." Would prefer to Hospital officials said staff keep them coming.
