30 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 5, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Students bring home medals A team of Sheridan marketing students, competing against 14 other colleges at the recent Ontario Colleges (OCMC) Marketing Competition held in Niagara Falls, brought home a total of two gold, two silver and one bronze medal from this hotly contested annual event. Winners included Kevin Viana, an Oakville resident in his final term of the Marketing Co-op Program at Sheridan, who won a gold medal in sales presentation and silver in quiz bowl. This is the third time Viana has been part of the Sheridan team at OCMC, and he likens it to a major sporting event. "It's an adrenaline rush from the moment you get there," he said. Marketing students have to go through tryouts to make the team, and those selected spend 10 weeks preparing for the two-day competition. Each year, 15 colleges send students to compete in a total of 11 events at the OCMC. Since 2000, Sheridan has placed in the top three colleges a total of six times. Other Sheridan winners at this year's OCMC included the team of Mike Alves and Rachel Bosley, who won gold in marketing research; Joline Christiani and Amanda Patchett, who earned silver in international marketing; and the team of Vanessa Lawson and Adam Ball, who received bronze in integrated marketing communications. Rookie robotics team takes top honours Children from more than 44 countries including Halton were handed the challenge of designing and building an original robot in the First Lego League Challenge (FLL) where teams solve real-world problems through robot design and research. After eight weeks of research and design, the 2008 FLL Challenge culminated in the regional Halton/Peel FLL Championships at Mentor College in Mississauga. Among the participants were girls and boys aged nine to 14. The HobbyBots Devils and the Hobby Bots Sonic Hawks from FastCats Radio Control Racing Parties and Hobby in Oakville were there. The two teams included 11 children from Halton who had taken summer hobby session in Lego robotics at FastCAts to have the background necessary to be involved in the competition. The teams met twice a week. The HobbyBots Devils, as a rookie team and new to the world of Lego, won the highest honour in the competition and have qualified to compete in the Saturday, Dec. 6 Ontario Provincial Championships to be held at St. Mildred's Lightbourn School. In addition, the HobbyBots Devils were awarded the third place trophy for robot performance. The rookie HobbyBots Sonic Hawks, also finished well, placing fifth before the sudden death competition. That team finished with the honour of a trophy in robot programming. The challenge has two parts, the project and the robot game. FLL events are like sporting events where referees monitor and score the robot game. Judges review team presentations and teams earn awards.
