Video art exhibitions to open at two venues Oakville Galleries presents the opening of two highly anticipated video art exhibitions running from Dec. 6 to Feb. 22. People Like Us: The Gossip of Colin Campbell at Centennial Square is the first major exhibition of Colin Campbell's work since his death in 2001. Campbell used video as a flexible and accessible medium for storytelling; his work is about characters and their words. Through videotape, he gossiped with and about his real social circle and created a new one, a group of fictional personas who became tangibly real once their tapes were watched, loved (or hated) and talked about. Curated by Jon Davies, this exhibition will tour Canada.Accompanying this exhibition is Canadian video innovator Gareth Long's Second, Third, Fourth in Gairloch Gardens. The work of Long tends toward conceptual gestures that play with formal ideas of translation, narrative and medium-specificity. His projects frequently turn video into material objects in an effort to explore video's value as infinitely reproducible. This exhibition was programmed to coincide with the current retrospective at Centennial Square; as Campbell's former student, Long's clever experimentations with video are a timely testament to the late artist's ongoing influence. A public opening will be held Friday, Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Centennial Square, 120 Navy St. A reception will follow from 8:30 to 10 p.m. in Gairloch Gardens, 1306 Lakeshore Rd. E.
