MICHAEL WILLEMS / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER TACTICAL TAKEDOWN: A young suspect surrenders to a heavily armed tactical team following a two-hour standoff in north Oakville on Wednesday. The suspect was wanted in connection with an armed assault against a 17-year-old victim on Dec. 5. Suspect surrenders to tactical team By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF An 18-year-old Oakville male is in custody following a two-hour standoff that saw both Halton police and the Hamilton police tactical team deployed to a north Oakville neighbourhood. The incident began at around noon Wednesday when Halton police attempted to apprehend a man who was wanted in connection with an armed assault that took place in Oakville on Friday, Dec. 5. That assault left a 17-year-old acquaintance with a broken wrist and a severe laceration to his head. The subsequent investigation led police to a north Oakville home, where they confronted the suspect. "When detectives approached him at his home today (Wednesday) he ran back inside and he barricaded himself in the home," said Sgt. Brian Carr, Halton Police public affairs officer. "At that point we undertook all necessary precautions." These precautions could be seen in the neighbourhood, with the suspect's street blocked at both ends by police cruisers. Across the street from the teen's home, police tactical team members and a canine unit could be observed using a parked minivan for cover. One officer was aiming a rifle in the direction of the suspect's home. At around 1:45 p.m., a police armoured vehicle arrived on the scene. It pulled up directly in front of the teen's house and quickly deployed seven police tactical team members, who took up positions behind their vehicle. They exchanged shouts with the suspect, who almost immediately emerged with his hands in the air. Police brought the suspect to the ground, searched him and placed him in a waiting police cruiser. As Wednesday was the suspect's 18th birthday, police said he will be facing some charges as a young offender and some as an adult. The suspect cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act because the majority of the charges against him stem from incidents that occurred when he was 17. He has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, mischief to property not exceeding $5,000, two counts of failing to comply with a probation order and possession of a controlled substance. The Halton Regional Police Service is continuing to investigate. Anyone with information related to it is asked to contact the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4777, ext 2215 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). www.carstaroakville.com 547 Trafalgar Rd. 905-845-7579 2212 Wyecroft Rd. 905-847-2595 · Full Mechanical Repairs · Emissions Testing & Repairs (Only at Wyecroft location) * HURRY IN!
