This mini crisis came to an end on Thursday when a much-relieved Ireland reported two consecutive tests of the Y's water, carried out by the Halton Region, had come back negative for lead. "They've given us the green light to remove the signs," he said. "There is no lead in the water." Ireland noted the positive lead result came as quite a surprise given that the Oakville YMCA facility was only built in 2002 and as such has copper piping instead of cast iron. "There really are no sources of lead within our building," said Ireland. "So we're really not sure what's happening, whether the (first) test was done incorrectly or whatever. " With that in mind, Burgher suggested people living in homes built before 1990 should take the precaution of running their water for five minutes in the morning before drinking it. He said this could be accomplished by simply having a shower before using water to make juice or coffee with breakfast. Anyone living in older homes, who is concerned about their drinking water, can call the Regional Health Department at 905-825-6000, ext. 7884 to have it tested.
