www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 17, 2008 - 35 STA surprising in boys' hockey By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR A month ago, Josh Ruys wasn't sure what he'd gotten himself into. The 18-year-old, who decided to play high school hockey this season after playing in the Provincial Junior A Hockey League a year ago, wasn't overwhelmed by what he saw from the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders in the early going. "At the beginning of the year, if you watched us, you'd say `Where are these guys going?'" said Ruys. "But now, it's starting to look (better) each game, more and more. Every game we pick up different stuff." The Raiders, under new coach Chris Alderson, improved to 5-2-1 in Halton play Monday with a 3-1 victory over the Oakville Tralfgar Red Devils at Oakville Arena. Aquinas and OT will be among the local teams to be moved into Halton's top tier when the league separates its divisions after the Christmas break. The Richardson Divisionleading T.A. Blakelock Tigers, Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers and Holy Trinity Titans will also make the cut, while it appears the Loyola Hawks will beat out the Abbey Park Eagles for the final Tier 1 spot. Ruys had a goal and an assist to lead Aquinas past OT, which entered the game with a 5-1 record. Brad Gillies and Dylan Pascos also tallied for the Raiders, with Matt Oliveira earning two assists. Justin Bailey recorded the victory in goal. Kyle Patterson scored OT's goal on a fiveon-three powerplay in the third period. Alderson said Monday's win was an important one for Aquinas. "If we want to be one of the top teams in the league this year, teams like (OT) we have to make sure we can handle," he said. The Raiders visited the Titans yesterday (Tuesday), while Abbey Park hosted the Bishop Reding Royals. Ridge will face OT and Blakelock will travel to Milton today (Wednesday), and the preChristmas schedule wraps up tomorrow (Thursday) when Loyola entertains the E.C. Drury Spartans. Bowmanville carried a 3-0 lead into the third period before Jeremy Welsh and Lindsay Sparks scored for the Blades.
