24 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 19, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Coffee House is an event not to be missed at Loyola By Tricia Strachan GRADE 12, ST. IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA D immed lights, the aroma of coffee, a packed cafeteria of eager listeners, and a single spotlight are essential for a coffee house at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School. Recently the high school's fall installment of the semi-annual Coffee House, gave voice to some of Loyola's most talented performers and bands. By tradition, each coffee house sets the stage for a WE MAKE YOUR HOUSE A HOME Lang Wall Calendars Lang Travel Mugs fresh and extremely lively experience on two levels. The first is for the audience, to enjoy being entertained by classmates and friends. The second is for the performers, bands and dancers who showcase their talent on stage and have fun doing what they do best, whether it be an Irish jig or filling the room with the vibration of a single bass guitar. Though coffee house is an exciting and entertaining night of music and dance, a peek behind the scenes and an observation of the amount of preparation that goes into each event and each singular performance itself, would reveal that a truly successful coffee house relies on the amount of work put into it. From the members of student council, who are responsi- ble for setting up the show through ticket sales, decoration, and general organization, to the masters/mistresses of ceremonies who spend hours rehearsing jokes for the smooth transitions required between acts, and ultimately, the performers themselves who spend days and weeks in rehearsals working on their sets -- coffee house is no walk in the park. Instead, it is a carefully planned and executed endeavor that encompasses the hard work of all involved in order to be the sensation it becomes on the actual night. Our recent Coffee House was especially diverse in its featured acts; a delighted audience had the pleasure of listening to and watching some soulful soloists, Irish, as well as Hip Hop dancers, some of Loyola's most celebrated bands, as well as the musicians who played their fiddles, guitars and basses, pianos, harmonicas, and even beatboxed to accompany them. Grade 12 student Giorgio Pasqualini, a young and talented musician and member of the band The Green Party (one of the many bands that performed at Coffee House), reflected upon the event saying, "It's fun to play for our friends. It's a great way to showcase our school's talent. When I'm on stage, I feel pumped because it's all I want to do and I love taking out all my emotions through music `cause if I didn't, I'd be insane." Spoken like a true performer, Pasqualini's comment illustrates that Coffee House has long acted as an outlet for the students to express whatever they are feeling through their performances, and from their personal selfexpression, evolves a widely compelling show for all to enjoy. Don't be surprised if you see one Loyola's coffee house performers on TV one day; Coffee House proves Loyola has no shortage of talent.
